Sudan is participating for the first time in the history in La Biennale di Venezia [15th International Architecture Exhibition] in September 2016 until 27 November under the title of "NUBIA, The
Di[place]d Kingdom”.
We are presenting our country as a kingdom because The kingdoms of Nubia are located in Sudan between Northern Sudan and Aswan at the south of Egypt . Nubia derives from a word in the Nubian language, meaning "The Land Of Gold".
The pavilion is presenting ancient Nubian civilizations and their uniqueness, Which date back to 7000 years. Nubian culture is a rich and attractive one. Throughout the years this culture was maintained and developed to reach this level of magnificence and
greatness .
The Nubian culture was developed through 3 eras. These eras represent Nubians in different periods starting from kerma kingdom (2500BC), Kush kingdom (1700BC) to Meroe kingdom (350AD) . All these kingdoms are considered Nubia now. The land of the Nubians who are the heroes of our story in the pavilion.
Alejandro Aravena as a challenge of REPORTING FROM THE FRONT requested the countries to present an issue in their country and propose a solution . Hence we are sharing the Nubias' displacement story which started a century ago, however, it's effect lasted until this day .The scar will never be healed unless we act.
It's a tragedy story . A Story of loss, longing and hope of a bright future. It's about the act of conquering which can damage the world we live in and the feeling of fading away. Some people want to steal one's pure light just for the mere pleasure of enjoying benefits that
come. Millions of people around the world were forced to leave their homes as a result of wars ,oppression,
and conflicts. But The Nubians in our story have been displaced for different reasons.
Sudan pavilion is representing the above discussions with images, concluding the argue by presenting a proposed design for Nubians based on their lifestyle. Taking into consideration social life, economical style , arts and architecture style, building materials and methods. All that to REBUILD a sustainable village and a united community to improve the quality of life . Hence to revive Nubian architecture.
